Villa Yambol: A Bulgarian Wine Producer with a History as Rich as its Wines

Take it from the God of wine and feasts, it’s time to try Bulgarian wine. One of the most underrated and unknown regions for wine is home to a rich history of winemaking.

For our first Sippa Club event, we have partnered with Villa Yambol, Bulgarian winemakers located in the Thracian Valley. One of the largest wine regions in Bulgaria, the Thracian Valley is believed to be home to the first ancient civilisations to have established vineyards and made wine. We are excited to uncover the rich history of Bulgarian winemaking with Villa Yambol and our fellow Sippers.

Wine has been produced on Bulgarian soil for over 5000 years, occupying a central role in Thracian culture. Wine was held in such high esteem that it was regarded as a symbol of unity between men and gods and was used as ritual offerings to their gods. The Thracians were fond of Dionysian festivities, the God of wine and feasts, where during wine celebrations beautiful women praised Dionysus with their dancing. Not only are the Thracians considered the oldest winemakers, they were also considered some of the best in ancient times. They were the originators of the wine cult, making it even more fitting to use their wines to launch our own cult (I mean club).

The Thracians believed there were three kinds of people on this earth. They consist of those who drink young, light wine, those who drink structured, complex wine, and those who drink sweet wine. Which group do you belong to? Villa Yambol is most known for its Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, from crisp whites to bold reds and everything in between. Villa Yambol is a true reflection of Bulgarian wine culture, and we are so excited to take our fellow wine enthusiasts on this journey of uncovering their versatile range of wines.

It’s the rich history and story behind these wines that make Bulgaria so fascinating as the backdrop of our very first event. Immerse yourself in the world of Gods and Dionysian festivities and indulge with us as the Thracians did with wines from Villa Yambol – we can’t promise any dancing maidens though.
